What it is

Understanding Full Body Massages

A full body massage covers the whole body in one continuous session: feet, calves, thighs, glutes, back, shoulders, neck, head, arms and hands, with chest, abdomen and face included only if you ask for them. It runs for 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Your therapist brings the oils and the music and comes to your home, hotel or office anywhere in London. You just need somewhere to lie down and a couple of your own towels out ready.

We offer a complete range of treatment styles appropriate to full body sessions, from our three classics Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and sports massage to traditional styles such as our popular Lomi Lomi or Thai massage. If you would like essential oils worked into the session, book our Ayurvedic or aromatherapy massage.

Whichever style you choose, our therapists have been specifically trained to ensure your session flows harmoniously from start to finish, leaving you renewed from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. The style changes how it feels more than what gets covered, and you can compare all our treatments side by side.

Whether you need to soothe tight muscles after a long day at work or simply want a couple of hours to yourself, a full body massage at home will hit the spot. The focus of our therapists is always therapeutic: genuine relaxation and muscle tension release throughout.

At home

Why Have a Full Body Massage at Home?

Getting on the Tube or sitting in a cab after a full body treatment is one of the worst ways to end it. You've spent an hour completely unwinding and then you're immediately back in the noise of London. When your therapist comes to you, that doesn't happen. You finish the session in your own space, pull a blanket over yourself if you want, and let it all settle.

There's also something about being on your own bed or sofa, in a room that smells familiar, that allows your muscles to genuinely let go in a way a treatment room sometimes doesn't quite manage. We've had clients tell us this is the single biggest difference they notice when they switch to booking with us.

No journey home with jelly legs, no rushing to get dressed, no disrupting what the treatment has done. Just proper rest, in your own space.

"In over a decade of doing this, the clients who get the most from a full body session are the ones who let go of the idea that more time on one area means a better result. When the whole body is worked together, the effect is completely different. Your nervous system responds to the whole, not just the parts."

What's covered

What's Included in a Full Body Massage?

A full body session covers head, neck and shoulders, back, glutes (buttocks), thighs, calves, feet, arms and hands. Chest, abdomen and face are yours to include or leave out.

You choose the areas yourself when you book, on our Massage Focus Man. On desktop you'll see a body outline and click each part you want included. On mobile or tablet you'll see the same parts as a list.

If there are any areas you'd prefer your therapist not to touch, deselect them before you confirm. And if you forget, just tell your therapist when they arrive.

Your therapist will arrive, greet you warmly, and take a few minutes to understand your preferences and any areas that need particular attention. Once you're comfortable, they'll begin working through the whole body in a continuous, connected flow. Here's what to expect:

Start of session, lower body

Most full body sessions begin with you lying face down. Your therapist will start at your feet, working through the soles and arches, easing tension that builds up throughout the day. From there they'll move to your ankles and calves, using kneading petrissage and gliding effleurage strokes to relax the muscles and encourage circulation.

Your therapist then moves to your thighs, using a combination of soft tissue techniques to release deep-seated tension and restore flexibility. If you'd like, they can also work on your glutes, applying focused pressure to ease tightness in this often-neglected area.

Your therapist will use a towel to cover areas not being worked on throughout. If you'd prefer your glute work done over the towel, just say so and they'll adapt without hesitation.

We train our therapists to move between body parts as seamlessly as possible. During a good full body session you shouldn't really notice the transitions at all. It should feel like one continuous treatment, not a sequence of separate areas.

Middle of session, upper body

This phase begins with your lower back. Gentle but effective strokes ease away tension here before your therapist builds pressure upward toward the shoulders, which in most Londoners hold a disproportionate amount of stress. Expect focused work on any knots and tightness, with the aim of leaving that area genuinely lighter.

From the shoulders, your therapist moves to your neck and head. This is a really important part of a full body session that a lot of people ask to skip, which is a mistake. The neck and head work can be deeply settling, especially for anyone who carries tension behind the eyes or up into the scalp.

We'd strongly suggest you don't ask your therapist to skip the head. Clients who are new to full body massage often feel that more time on the back means a better treatment. It doesn't. The head work is what pulls the whole session together.

Concluding part, front of body

For the final phase, your therapist will ask you to turn over. They'll continue working your neck and shoulders from the front, sliding their hands beneath your head and using your body's natural weight to draw tension out through the upper back. It's one of those techniques that's difficult to describe but clients consistently rate it as a highlight.

Your arms and hands are next. Tired, overworked hands respond really well to even a few minutes of focused attention. It's easy to overlook this area but it's worth letting your therapist spend time here.

If you'd like, you can also request chest and abdomen work as part of your session. And if you'd rather skip the facial element to avoid oil on your face, just let your therapist know beforehand.

The style of your treatment shapes all of the above. A Swedish massage delivers the same sequence with a softer, more flowing touch, ideal for unwinding. A deep tissue session uses the same structure but with deeper pressure and more targeted work on specific areas of tension.

Why the whole body

Benefits of Full Body Massage vs Partial

In the pace of London life, genuine relaxation is harder to find than most people realise.

A full body massage isn't just an indulgent upgrade on a partial treatment. It's a fundamentally different experience. When your whole body is worked on in one session, the cumulative effect is greater than the sum of its parts. Tension in one area feeds tension in another. Release them all together and the nervous system responds differently.

A partial treatment targets a specific area. A full body session addresses the whole system, and your body knows the difference.

We believe a full body massage is genuinely good for you, particularly if you're looking for total physical and mental restoration rather than relief from a single area.

Essential oils used during an aromatherapy full body massage in London

The physical benefits

  • Circulation encouraged throughout, which is what eases knots and stiffness
  • Effleurage for warmth, petrissage for the deeper tissue, tapotement where it helps
  • Relief that reaches everyday desk aches and training soreness alike
  • Techniques sequenced across the whole body rather than repeated on one part
  • Stiffness reduced and flexibility restored, not just the sore spot quietened
  • Thai adds acupressure and assisted stretching if you want the same thing done differently

The psychological benefits

  • Works on your nervous system, not only on your muscles
  • Different in kind to a targeted treatment if you are carrying stress or mental fatigue
  • Far easier to switch off properly in your own home
  • No unfamiliar smells, no background noise, nobody waiting outside the door
  • Tension eases in stages, so the calm at the end takes a while to come back from
  • Therapists chosen for empathy as well as technique, and tested for it before they join

Personalised

Adapting the Session to You

Everyone can benefit from a full body massage. That said, there are some practical differences in how sessions are tailored.

Some clients prefer firmer pressure and deeper strokes, particularly on the back, shoulders and legs. Others prefer a lighter touch throughout. What matters most is that you communicate your preferences clearly at the start, and your therapist will adapt.

Towel draping will also differ slightly depending on your comfort level, personal preferences and any cultural considerations. Your therapist will check in with you on this before they begin.

Our full body massages are designed for everyone. The session is always personalised to the individual, not a one-size approach.

Our clients include City professionals who need to decompress after a grinding week, athletes recovering from training, tourists who want to relax properly after days of walking, and people who simply book regularly because they know the value of it. Whatever your background, the experience is built around you.

What to wear

What to Wear for a Full Body Massage

A comfortable environment matters throughout, so whatever you wear should allow both you and your therapist to feel at ease.

Most clients undress and are covered with a towel throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any time. If you'd rather keep your underwear on, that's completely fine. Your therapist will work around it without making it an issue.

Your therapist arrives in our uniform and works in it: a branded TheMassageRooms t-shirt and comfortable trousers or leggings she can move and kneel in. She will step out of the room while you get ready, and wash her hands before she starts.

It comes up so often that we've written a full article on what to wear during a massage if you want more detail before you book.
