What is Lomi Lomi massage?

Lomi Lomi is Hawaiian massage, sometimes called Kahuna massage. The therapist uses long, continuous forearm strokes that flow from your shoulder to your hip in one movement, rather than working area by area. Lomi means to knead, rub and soothe, and the rhythm of it is the point.

Hajni gave me a Lomi massage which was truly wonderful. She is a great therapist and likes to feel she gets to know a little about her clients. I could not recommend her more. And her English is a lot better than my Hungarian! Thanks Hajni

I've chosen Edina as my massage therapist many times in the last 4 years or so. Yesterday, I was lucky to see her again and she didn't disappoint. She was amazing, with her calm, professional, friendly approach, she gave me a sensational 2 hour luxurious Lomi Lomi massage. I'm always relaxed during and after her treatment. Thank you once again Massage Rooms and of course special thanks to you Edina. Mk 🙂

I booked another Lomi Lomi massage session with Edina last week as my back and shoulders were aching due to long days spent at the office. As expected, Edina did an amazing job 🙂

Lomi Lomi Massage

How Lomi Lomi feels

Continuous is the word people reach for. The strokes do not stop and start the way they do in every other treatment, and after a few minutes you stop tracking where your therapist is.

  • Long forearm sweeps that travel the whole length of you without breaking
  • Generous warm oil, and a rhythm that gets into you rather than at you
  • Medium pressure, firmer than Swedish and nowhere near deep tissue
  • Gentle rocking and joint movement between the strokes, so you are moved as well as held
  • Deeply calming, and a fair few people find it unexpectedly emotional

That last one is worth saying out loud. Lomi Lomi has a reputation for loosening more than muscle, and if something surfaces halfway through, your therapist will not be remotely surprised.

It is also where the treatment gets its reputation. Because the strokes overlap and never quite stop, one pair of hands worked properly can feel like four or six. People describe losing track of how many there are, which is not a trick, just what continuous forearm work does to your sense of where you are being touched.

Is it right for you

Who Lomi Lomi massage suits

Worth booking if

  • You want something that feels different from every massage you have had
  • You are wound up rather than knotted up, and normal massage has not touched it
  • Being handled area by area has always felt a bit clinical to you
  • You want relaxation but a bit more substance than a Swedish massage
  • You have been through something and you need an hour or two of being cared for

Mention it when you book if

  • You are after a specific knot dealt with, which deep tissue does better
  • You would rather not have long strokes across the whole body at once
  • You are pregnant, at any stage, so we can send a pregnancy therapist
  • You have a skin condition, since this one uses a lot of oil
  • You have had recent surgery or an injury still sore to touch
What to expect

What happens during Lomi Lomi massage

Below is how a typical 90 minute session pans out. A 60 or a two hour booking follows the same shape, with more or less of the middle.

  1. Before she arrives

    Room to walk around you

The floor is better than a bed for this one, and your therapist needs to get to all four sides. Old towels, because it uses more oil than most treatments.

  2. First 5 minutes

    Finding the rhythm

Long, slow warming strokes while you settle. Some therapists work in silence, some hum quietly. Both are traditional and neither needs a response from you.

  3. Next hour and 20

    Flowing

Forearm strokes travelling the length of the body, one side then the other, with rocking and gentle joint movement between them. It stops feeling like separate strokes fairly quickly.

  4. Final 5 minutes

    Slowing

The rhythm winds down rather than stops. Most people need a proper minute afterwards, and a glass of water is not a bad idea.

Never had a massage before? Our guide to what to expect at your first massage walks through the whole thing, from preparing the room to how you will feel afterwards.

At home

Why have it at home rather than at a spa?

Very few London spas offer Lomi Lomi properly, and the ones that do want an appointment weeks out. We have therapists trained in it who will come to you this week.

It also wants space. Your therapist needs to move around you continuously, so a bed pushed against a wall is the one setup that does not work. Floor space is better here than almost any other treatment we do.
