Injured client receiving a mobile sports massage at home

What is sports massage?

Sports massage treats one thing at a time. Rather than working the whole body, your therapist goes at the muscle group that is giving trouble using trigger point release, deep strokes and stretching, to speed up recovery, restore movement and stop the same injury coming back.

What people say about our sports massage therapists

Booked a sports massage last minute after a run. Joana arrived within an hour and knew exactly where to focus. Totally excellent value at the price!

Had another amazing sports massage from the always friendly and professional Marta. She has really helped me in my rehab from a hip operation giving 30degrees extra flexion after my first session. I can't recommend Marta highly enough my only hesitation in doing this will be that it will make it tougher for me to book her again

Joanna was more Sports massage and sorted out many of my aches. A few days later, Izabella gave an especially relaxing massage and I almost drifted off to sleep. Different but both good. Being a relaxing Sunday I am booking Izabella again today!

Sports Massage

How sports massage feels

Focused, and firmer than most people expect the first time. This is the treatment that does the most for you and relaxes you the least.

  • Most of the session on the one area rather than a tour of the whole body
  • Trigger point work and myofascial release, a held pressure that hurts and then suddenly lets go
  • Deep strokes along the muscle with stretching in between
  • Sore that evening, and noticeably freer inside a day or two
  • Your therapist tells you what she found and what is likely causing it

Worth being clear: this is not physiotherapy and we do not diagnose. If something needs assessing, see a physio first. Once you have a plan, this is the treatment that carries out the soft tissue part of it, at your place rather than theirs.

Is it right for you

Who sports massage suits

Worth booking if

  • You have pulled or strained something and want it looked at properly
  • You train regularly and the same spot keeps flaring up
  • You have an event coming and want to arrive loose rather than tight
  • Something is stiff enough that your form has started changing to avoid it
  • You are back from injury and the muscle around it has never quite let go

Mention it when you book if

  • The injury is fresh and still swollen, in which case wait a few days
  • You bruise easily, or you take blood thinning medication
  • You have not had it diagnosed and the pain is sharp rather than dull
  • You are pregnant, at any stage, so we can send a pregnancy therapist
  • You are being treated for a condition your physio has views about
What to expect

What happens during sports massage

Below is how a typical 90 minute session pans out. A 60 or a two hour booking follows the same shape, with more or less of the middle.

  1. Before she arrives

    Somewhere firm

Your bed or a mat on the floor, with room for your therapist to get to the side that is giving trouble. Old towels, since this one uses oil.

  2. First 5 minutes

    Working out what is wrong

What you did, when it started, what makes it worse. Your therapist may ask you to move the joint so she can see where it stops. Then broad warming strokes over the area.

  3. Next hour and 20

    The problem area

Deep, specific work into the muscle and the tissue round it, with held pressure on the trigger points. This is the part that is intense. Tell your therapist honestly where it is on the scale.

  4. Final 5 minutes

    Stretch and advice

Assisted stretching to give the muscle its length back, then what your therapist found and what to do about it. Usually a stretch to keep up and a sense of how many sessions it needs.

At home

Why have it at home rather than at a clinic?

Because if you have strained something, the walk to a clinic and back is exactly what you should not be doing. Moving on a fresh strain is how a two-day problem becomes a two-week one.

It is also the difference between a treatment you get round to and one you actually have. Sports massage works best regularly, and regularly is far easier when it comes to you after work rather than requiring an evening.

How sports massage differs from the alternatives

Most people land here torn between two. Here is the short version.

Sports Massage Deep Tissue Massage Physio Massage Thai Massage
Covers One problem area Whole body, most time where you need it One area, alongside rehab The whole body
Best for Strains and getting back to training Knots that keep coming back Recovery after a physio diagnosis Stiffness and lost movement
Pressure Firm, with held trigger points Firm and slow Firm, adapted to the injury Firm, through stretching
Afterwards Sore that evening, freer in a day Mildly sore for a day Sore, then more mobile Loose straight away

Questions

Common questions about sports massage

No, and most people who book it are not. The name describes the technique, not the client. If you have one area that keeps giving trouble, whether from running or from carrying a toddler on one hip, this is the treatment for it.
