What is aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage is a gentle full body massage using essential oils blended into the base oil. The strokes are broadly Swedish, and the oils are chosen for what you want from the session: lavender for sleep and calm, peppermint for headaches and clearing the head, tea tree for skin.

What people say about our aromatherapy massage therapists
Booked for a Sunday evening after a really long week. Just what I needed! Love that I didn't even have to leave my house - brilliant.
Dee was fantastic. Good instincts for soreness and with the correct solutions. Best in Class.
Susanna is a sweet, professional massage therapist and enjoys her job thoroughly. Would highly recommend her as she was on time, served with a smile, and also very interesting conversations. Can’t thank enough
A truly brilliant, relaxing massage from Melania.
Gabriella was an amazing therapist. Constantly updated me on her arrival time due to a slight delay from roadworks, and was extremely understanding and accommodating. She put me at complete ease and was very professional and at the same time her massage and touch was blissful and made all my aches disappear. She has excellent work ethic and goes out of her way to help. Highly recommended!

How aromatherapy massage feels
Very close to a Swedish massage in the hands, and quite different in the head, because the scent is doing something the strokes are not.
- Long gliding strokes to spread the oil, then soft kneading through the fleshier areas
- Firmer circular work into the usual tight spots, the shoulders mostly
- Light rhythmic tapping and gentle stretching towards the end
- The blend chosen at the start, and the scent stays with you for hours afterwards
- Calming rather than invigorating, unless you have asked for peppermint
You do not have to book it on its own. Most people have the oils added to a Swedish or deep tissue massage, which works perfectly well. Just say so when you book.
Who aromatherapy massage suits
Worth booking if
- You are not sleeping and want something that helps you wind down properly
- Stress rather than muscle tension is the thing you are actually carrying
- You want a gentle massage and like the idea of the scent doing some work
- Headaches, low mood or a heavy cold have been hanging around
- You want the whole body done at a pressure you never have to brace against
Mention it when you book if
- You are sensitive to scent, or get headaches from strong smells
- You have asthma that reacts to fragrance
- You have sensitive skin or a history of reactions to oils
- You are pregnant, since we leave essential oils out entirely then
- You want deep work, in which case book deep tissue and skip the oils
What happens during aromatherapy massage
Below is how a typical 90 minute session pans out. A 60 or a two hour booking follows the same shape, with more or less of the middle.
-
Before she arrives
Somewhere warm and quiet
Your bed or the floor, old towels, and the heating up a little. Have a think about what you actually want from it, because that decides the oils.
-
First 5 minutes
Choosing and settling
A quick conversation about sleep, stress and skin, then your therapist blends. After that, long warming strokes over the back while the scent fills the room.
-
Next hour and 20
Head to toe
The whole body in turn at a comfortable pressure, with firmer circular work wherever you are tight. Nothing here should require bracing.
-
Final 5 minutes
Winding down
Lighter and slower to finish. Leave the oil on your skin rather than showering it straight off.
Never had a massage before? Our guide to what to expect at your first massage walks through the whole thing, from preparing the room to how you will feel afterwards.
Choosing the oils
Your therapist brings a range and blends at the door once you have told her what the week has been like. The three that get chosen most often are lavender for calm and sleep, peppermint for headaches and a foggy head, and tea tree where skin is the concern.
If a particular scent puts you off, say so before your therapist starts rather than lying there hoping it fades. It will not fade, and there are plenty of alternatives in the bag.
How aromatherapy massage differs from the alternatives
Most people land here torn between two. Here is the short version.
| Aromatherapy Massage | Swedish Massage | Deep Tissue Massage | Lomi Lomi Massage | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure | Light to medium | Light to medium | Firm and slow | Medium, continuous |
| Best for | Sleep, stress, headaches | General tension and winding down | Knots that keep coming back | Feeling wound up |
| Oils | Essential oils, chosen for you | Plain base oil | Plain base oil | Generous warm oil |
| Feels like | Swedish, with the scent working too | Soothing, area by area | A good ache in one spot | Being rocked, in one flow |

Common questions about aromatherapy massage
Lavender if you are not sleeping or need to come down from something, and it is far and away the most requested. Peppermint for headaches or a foggy head. Tea tree where skin is the issue. Your therapist brings a range and will talk it through before she starts.
Yes, and most people do exactly that. Book a Swedish or deep tissue massage and ask for aromatherapy oils in the notes. You get the pressure you wanted and the scent as well.
Tell your therapist before she starts, not halfway through. She carries several and will blend something else. An hour lying in a scent you dislike is nobody's idea of a treatment.
We leave essential oils out entirely during pregnancy, because some are not recommended and the safest approach is to skip them all. Book a pregnancy massage instead, which uses plain unscented oil.
Ninety minutes, the same as any full body massage. The oils do not change the timing, so book the length you would book anyway and ask for the blend when your therapist arrives.
£59 for 60 minutes, £80 for 90 minutes and £110 for two hours, the same as every other treatment we offer. Some outer London areas carry a small travel charge, which you see before you pay. We have written up what a massage costs in London and how we compare.
Whatever you are comfortable in when she arrives. During the massage you undress as far as you want to and stay covered by a towel throughout, with only the part being worked on uncovered. If that is the bit you were worried about, what to wear during a massage goes through it properly.
Often within the hour, though it depends on who is free near you at the time. Put your postcode into the box on this page and you will see the therapists covering your area and the times they have left today. We work seven days a week, from 7am until 11pm.
Somewhere to lie down, either your own bed or a mat on the floor, and your own towels. Your therapist brings the oil and the music. We ask you to use your own towels for hygiene, because a therapist working in homes all day cannot launder between visits the way a spa can, and yours will always be cleaner. Old ones are best, since oil stains.
Across more than 200 London neighbourhoods, wherever you are staying or living. Your therapist comes to your home, your hotel room or your workplace. Enter your postcode above to see who covers your address, or look through every area we cover.
